Mi~Scan® is an in-person scan that measures your breast density using gentle radio-frequency technology — no X-rays, no compression. It gives you objective, personal information about your breasts that can’t be known by looking or feeling alone.
What is breast density, and why does it matter?
Your breasts are made up of fatty tissue and dense fibroglandular tissue. The proportion of dense tissue is your breast density — and it varies naturally from woman to woman, and can change throughout your life.
Density isn’t something you can judge by how your breasts look or feel. Knowing it matters because dense tissue can make changes harder to spot on a standard mammogram, and density is one of the factors used in understanding personal breast cancer risk. Mi~Scan® gives you that measurement objectively, so you can understand your own normal and track it over time.
How a Mi~Scan® works
A trained practitioner uses a handheld device to take a series of gentle measurements around each breast. The whole appointment takes about 10 minutes.
Gentle measurement
A small handheld calliper rests lightly on either side of the breast. There’s no compression and nothing uncomfortable.
A safe radio-frequency signal
A low-energy radio-frequency signal passes through the breast and is recorded — the same family of waves used in everyday wireless technology, with no ionising radiation.
Your density result
Measurements from several points are processed to produce your breast density — a BI-RADS category and a percentage — for each breast.

Mi~Scan® provides objective breast-density information to support healthcare professionals. It is not a standalone diagnostic device and does not diagnose breast cancer. A community acceptability study, supported by the NHS Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance, has also assessed its use in everyday settings.
